The fire at Ambue Ari

The indiscriminated slash-and-burn farming in Bolivia caused an uncontrollable fire, which has sadly affected Ambue Ari. The volunteers and staff have been working hard day and night to clean the firebreaks and with that avoiding that the fire enters the animal areas.
In coordination with the Office for Biodiversity (DGB), the Government of Santa Cruz and the municipality of Guarayos, together with our team, we have been working to control the situation.
The fire that is closest to the animals is under control for the moment, but there are still parts burning higher on the mountain, that represent a real risk for our centre and the environment.

Luckily it didn’t reach the animals areas, but did affect the Centre. We have seen many animals, including howler monkeys ((Alouatta sara), capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) etc., that escaped from the flames, looking for shelter in the trees of the Centre.

We are very grateful to the people, which have been working hard right during the fire, protecting not only the area of our animals, but also of the wild animals that found a refuge in Ambue Ari. We also would like to say thank you to the firefighters of Guarayos, who supported us till the last days, as well as the government of Santa Cruz. Without the support of everybody and hard work, this wouldn’t have been possible.

We are now safe, but we know that the fire is a risk that appears every year again. In order to prevent this situation, we want to buy firefighter bags. If you know anybody who could donate one of this backpacks, please drop us a line on facebook or via info@intiwarayassi.org. If you want to, you can also support us with a donation.

Thank you for all the support combating this disaster.
