BEES – Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary is a home for old elephants. At BEES we give elephants a chance to live free. We provide an alternative for elephants and their owners to move away from the busy city life and hardships of trekking by providing a retirement home for elderly elephants.

Located just 2.5hrs drive South-West of Chiang Mai, amongst beautiful mountain scenery and lush countryside, BEES is a local family and community based project. Situated in a valley in Mae Tan, Thung Yaw Maechaem, we have  breath taking views of Doi Inthanon the highest mountain in Thailand.

This is a place where you might just find yourself lost in the moment. Experience elephants in a natural environment that stimulates their inherent wild behaviours…. Something well deserved as these elephants have spent their entire lives in the logging or trekking industry before finally arriving at BEES.

Join our Volunteer Program or short stay guest package, live in the unique local style tradition (a mattress and mosquito net on the floor), enjoy refreshing cold showers after a warm days work and be rewarded by the sight of these beautiful creatures getting a better life. Get up close and personal and learn about elephants from a different perspective.

Mae Kam is an elephant we are renting to keep from working. She is 50 years old and has spent most of her life working in the logging and trekking industries. We hope we can persuade the owner to sell her to us in the future.

Mae Jumpee is our second elephant  and we are also renting her to keep her from working. She has worked in the Tourism industry for a very long time. Her back is misshapen from hard work and her breasts are very large from long periods of suckling her calves. During her 66 years Mae Jumpee has had approximately 8 calves.  Her skin tears very easily and she is a very worn-out old  lady who needs lots of love and attention.

Accommodation and Facility information:

At  BEES we offer unique local Thai style accommodation. This means that our beds are mattresses on the floor covered with a mosquito net to keep you comfortable.

We do not have hot water, so you will enjoy nice cold showers after a hard day’s work.

We have spiders that are permanent residents inside the huts, they wont harm you if you don’t harm them!

RAINY SEASON INFO:

The rainy season is from April— September.  It rains constantly during this time which makes it very difficult to build. The ground is very muddy and it’s a great time for scorpions to find their food. If you choose to come during these month  insure you have appropriate footwear for rough conditions, eg gumboots.

FOREST BURNING SEASON:

Although the government is “trying” to stop the burning of Thailand’s beautiful forests, it still continues every year between January—March. This is the dry season therefore the forest burns easily. NOTE: If you suffer from severe asthma attacks please note that the pollutants in the air can trigger a attack, if you choose to come at this time please make sure you bring appropriate medications.
